January 2, 2009, Newsletter Issue #238: Get Creative With A Spiral Slicer

Tip of the Week

A good way to transform fresh vegetables into ribbon like strands is to use a kitchen gadget called a spiral slicer.  Let your imagination run wild and impress your family and friends with decorative dishes using the colorful vegetable strands as a topping for salads, slaw, pizza, baked potato, or even as a pasta substitute with your favorite sauce or olive oil.

This is an excellent idea if you have children who refuse to eat their veggies.  Slice a few of them for a variety of colors and they might find these "ribbons" appealing enough to eat.  It is certainly worth a try!

The vegetables well suited to spiral-slicing include squash, carrots, turnips, and sweet potatoes.
