April 23, 2010, Newsletter Issue #304: Female Vegetarian Fertility

Tip of the Week

Did you know that vegetarian women usually have menstrual cycles that range anywhere from 30-38+ days? Conception can be frustrating for vegetarian women who do not realize this. After I got married, I used to run out and buy pregnancy tests every month after the 30th or 31st day until I realized this.

Another barrier to conception for vegetarian women is having low body fat. This only circumstantially has to do with the vegetarian lifestyle. Nevertheless, your fat levels are related to your estrogen levels. If you are underweight, conception will be more challenging. Even just gaining 5 pounds can make a difference. If you are so thin that you've stopped having periods altogether, this is obviously not healthy either. Go eat something!

Vegetarian women are not less fertile though. We simply ovulate less often because our cycles are longer.
