May 7, 2010, Newsletter Issue #306: Favorite Protein Supplements

Tip of the Week

What are everyone's favorite protein supplements?

My personal choice is Manitoba Harvest's Organic Hemp Protein & Fiber Powder. The taste and texture are not bad. It blends well into a glass of orange juice. One serving contains 11g of protein, 14 g of fiber, and--get this--600 mg of Omega-3s! It contains all 10 essential amino acids as well.

Most protein supplements contain two things I don't like: whey or soy. Whey comes from milk. Milk, of course, isn't intended for adults. While milk is technically vegetarian, I try to avoid it. Soy, while it is a great source of protein, becomes quite toxic when it is subject to modern methods of factory processing. Additionally, soy is high in phtyo-estrogens. These phyto-estrogens mess with our hormones--men or women--and contribute to birth defects and fertility problems.

Also, Omega-3s are an often neglected nutrient in the vegetarian diet. Studies show that 99% of Americans are deficient in Omega-3s. Fish is the most common source of Omega-3s. Naturally, this shows us how crucial it is for vegetarians to monitor their intake. Omega-3s help clean out fatty build up in our arteries, among other things.

One last thing I love about Manitoba Harvest's Hemp Protein is that it doesn't contain any artificial sweeteners, as so many protein products do. Watch out for anything that claims to be good for you and contains Splenda, NutriSweet, or Aspartame.
