While most people start thinking at this time of year about needing to lose weight, maybe you need to gain some--I know I need to. Just because we are vegetarian doesn't mean our diets are "perfect." (Whose among us is?) You still have three weeks or so to think about how you can improve your diet (and other things in your life) better.
I know many vegetarians, and when I think of some of the ways in which we could improve our diets and health, these things come to mind:
~ Eating less junk food and sugar
~ Exercising
~ Going vegan, going "raw," or going "organic"
~ Giving up or cutting back on one of our bad habits--such as coffee, candy, energy drinks, or smoking
~ As I mentioned, gaining weight...losing it for others
~ Cooking "real food" more and foregoing the processed foods (This includes fake meat, people!)
I always think it is best to start pondering New Year's Resolutions in advance so you can start mentally preparing now...or maybe even start to slowly ween yourself off the bad habit a little before 2010. If you really want to stick with it this next year, have a carefully crafted plan, know your options, and tell your family and friends what you intend to do so they can support you.
In addition to gaining weight, I want to cut back on eating cheese (Of course doing these two together will be a hoot). I have pretty much already cut cheddar out over the last few weeks. I'm going to try some of the non-dairy cheeses and organic/free-range cheeses available. Since I don't eat processed soy and only feel half-hearted about real milk, it'll be interesting to see what happens. If I can't stick it out, I will at bare minimum stay away from dyed, unhealthy cheeses (like cheddar) and stick to the healthier cheeses like feta and mozarella. Wish me luck!
