April 2, 2010, Newsletter Issue #301: Delicious International Meat-Free Recipes

Tip of the Week

When I visited New York City, one of the highlights of my trip was eating at an Ethiopian restaurant. I'm from a diverse area (southern California) and yet had never seen such a restaurant. I was thrilled. Two of the neatest parts of the meal included: eating with our hands (they apparently don't use silverware in Ethiopia) and the enormous crepe-like things that we used to scoop up the food one bite at a time (we ripped off a peice of the crepe-like thing and pinched a bite off food into it and ate it). It was delicious and educational!

Now you can create experiences like these in your own neck of the woods with the International Vegetarian Union's extensive collection of international recipes. If you've never paroused the website of the International Vegetarian Union (IVU), check it out sometime. They have a lot of great information, including, tons of meat-free recipes from around the globe (from places like Ethiopia) to spice up your routine!

For example, IVU has a section featuring 81 Caribbean recipes. Some of the recipes that catch my eye from this collection include Pumpkin Soup from Jamaica, chilli on a baked sweet potato, Triangle Mango Chili Jam from Bermuda, Beet Salad from Cuba, Sweet & Spicy Rice from Jamaica, and Baked Pineapple from Haiti.

IVU's collection features recipes from East and West Asia, India/South Asia, Africa, Greece, Italy, Europe (in general), as well as categories like Tex-Mex. If you have your own internationally-inspired recipe, you can submit it to IVU's collection also!

Have fun and enjoy!
